Snow Plowing
As she entered the lock the Mesabi Miner pushed about 600 feet of ice in front of her. Compacted into about 100 feet between the gates and the bow it fills the gate recesses. In order to open the gates the lock and dam operator uses bubbler lines on the lock floor and opens and closes the gates part way to clear the ice away. Depending on the ice conditions this can take several hours.
