The USACE is proposing the demolition of existing storage buildings and construction of New Storage Buildings at the St. Mary Falls Canal (Soo Locks), Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The Soo Locks is listed on the National Register of Historic Properties (NRHP) and National Historic Landmark (NHL). One of the buildings proposed to be demolished West Wing which is a contributing element to the National Historical Landmark.
The USACE has determined that the demolition of a contributing building would have an "adverse effect" to the historic nature of the Soo Locks under Section 106 of the National Historic Protection Act. The USACE will be developing a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to address these adverse effects which will include recordation of the contributing structures before demolition and the presence of archeological and tribal monitors during ground disturbing work.
