Detroit Corps office receives more than $22 million in recently approved Work Plan

DETROIT—The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District announces additions to its fiscal year 2016 program based on the recently approved Work Plan. This additional $22.4 million will be used in 2016 to repair breakwaters, dredge harbors and complete various projects throughout the Great Lakes.

"We recognize and are committed to spending these resources responsibly in order to ensure that taxpayer-provided funds are maximized within the Great Lakes. We construct, maintain and operate key infrastructure projects that are crucial to the Nation’s economy, environment, safety and quality of life, now and in the future,” said Lt. Col. Michael Sellers, district engineer, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District.

The work plan came about when Congress appropriated additional funding for ongoing work in the fiscal year 2016 Energy & Water Development Appropriations Act as contained in the 2016 Consolidated Appropriations Act.  The Corps developed an allocation plan, which included $46.3 million in additional funds for the entire Great Lakes, for high priority work packages based on the criteria established by Congress.

The Detroit District’s work plan increase of $22.4 million includes three new dredging projects, three dredging projects with additional funding, and six repair, replacement, or construction projects. In addition, the work plan includes design funding for two environmental restoration projects.

Projects that will be executed as a result of the fiscal year 2016 work plan include the following:

New dredging projects –

            Michigan –

                        Alpena Harbor                                                 $850,000

                        Manistique Harbor                                           $1.1 million

                        Monroe Harbor                                                $300,000

Repair, replacement or construction projects –

            Operations and Maintenance

                        Grand Haven Harbor, Mich.                                        $1.8 million

                        St. Marys River, Soo Locks, Mich. (2)                        $10.6 million

                        Ludington Harbor                                                           $750,000

            Construction

                        N. Wisconsin Environmental Infrastructure                    $867,000

                        Oakland County, Mich., Environmental Infrastructure  $880,000
