Corps partners with MDEQ to host “Permits and Processes: Working in Michigan Waters” symposium

DETROIT – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District Regulatory Office and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality Water Resources Division are hosting an informational outreach symposium entitled “Permits and Processes: Working in Michigan Waters”

This event will take an in-depth look at both the Corps and MDEQ regulatory programs, permit application and information requirements as well as the decision making process. For better understanding, throughout the day the staff will focus on a hypothetical major development project to highlight the various aspects of the Corps and MDEQ permit application and evaluation processes.

Contractors, consultants, municipalities and others who apply for permits on a professional basis are welcome to attend the full or individual sessions.

8:30 – 9:30 Overview of Corps & MDEQ Regulatory Authorities: The “big picture” of the Corps and MDEQ programs and services.


9:30 – 11:00 Jurisdiction, Wetland Delineations & Data Sheets: Establishing the geographic extent of regulatory jurisdiction, useful tips for delineations and automated data sheets.


11:00 – 12:00 The Complete Permit Application: A guide to the specific information needed for a complete permit application package, focusing on common errors and omissions.

12:00 – 1:00 Lunch (on your own)

1:00 – 2:00 MiWaters: A tutorial of MDEQ’s new online system for submitting and accessing permit applications and information.

2:00 – 3:00 Permit Coordination & Evaluation: Corps and MDEQ permit categories, endangered species and historic properties review, permit decision criteria and enforcement programs.

3:00 – 4:00 Project Purpose, Alternatives Analysis, & Mitigation: The alternative analysis process and a review of requirements for mitigation plans and monitoring reports.

4:00 – 4:30 Wrap Up: Recap of a hypothetical development project with time for questions and discussion.
