Detroit District Equal Employment Opportunity Leader honored with Diversity and Leadership Award

DETROIT- U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District’s Equal Employment Opportunity Officer, Valerie P. Stevenson, received the Diversity and Leadership Award during the 2016 Secretary of the Army Award Ceremony May 25 at the Pentagon.

    "Our strength, the strength of this nation, has come from our values, our ethos and our people," Secretary of the Army, Eric K. Fanning said. "The Soldiers and civilians we honor today epitomize the best the Army has to offer."

    Fanning presented the award to Stevenson for her significant contributions to the success of the Detroit District’s EEO program.

    "It is truly an honor to receive this prestigious award," Stevenson said. "However, I attribute the success of the Detroit District’s EEO program to the outstanding District leadership."

    Stevenson was recognized for the model EEO program she has implemented in the District that has increased awareness of EEO and diversity throughout the District. She was also recognized for the partnership she began with Detroit University Prep Academy High School in a community outreach mentoring program that allows college-bound high school students to learn about possible careers through District employees who serve as mentors. In addition, she was recognized for her work with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to broaden the applicant pool and increase the number of disabled veterans in the District’s workforce.
