Despite our name, we employ many people besides engineers, ranging from temporary survey aides to biologists with many years of service.

District personnel include both a technical staff and an advisory/administrative staff. The technical staff performs a variety of engineering, scientific, and other professional tasks, while the advisory/administrative staff offers professional support in such areas as accounting, information management, legal counsel, and public relations.

Our 600-plus employees fill positions at different levels, too. Some begin as trainees or temporary aides and, through their work, gain the experience and qualifications for a higher level or permanent position.

Trainees receive government-financed training consistent with their job duties to prepare them for greater responsibilities.
Career conditional appointments, many of which are also trainee positions, become permanent career appointments after a period of training and satisfactory job performance.

Higher-level employees also attend management and other specialized training courses from time to time as their duties expand, and in order to keep up-to-date in their field.

Although the District is constantly employing new people, others have worked for the Corps for as long as 20, 30, or even 40 years.

TEMPORARY JOBS

Although most jobs in the District are full-time, we have several programs which employ students and disadvantaged youths on a temporary or summer basis.
  • An Aide can work in any one of a variety of departments, such as engineering, surveying, lock operations, or parks and grounds.
  • Co-op or cooperative education students are those who intermittently work full-time several months at a time in lieu of attending school. Most of them are studying a professional field, such as engineering, leading to a bachelor's degree.
  • Other summer employees may fill positions such as carpenter's helper at the Sault Ste. Marie Area Office, clerk typist at the Detroit Area Office, civil engineering technician in the Construction or Regulatory Branches, and many others.

Summer jobs are announced in December in brochure 414, entitled "Summer Jobs," by the Office of Personnel Management.

For job information please contact the District's Human Resources Office, located at 477 Michigan Avenue, Detroit, Michigan 48226.
