The Detroit Area Office, like the other offices in the District, is responsible for the maintenance of navigation structures and channels.

The Detroit Office was one of the first in the Corps to use electronic sweeps (a vessel equipped with electronic sounding devices) to sound the bottom of navigation channels for obstructions.
