The Detroit District, established in 1841, covers 82,000 square miles of land inhabited by about 14 million people and includes the states of Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin and Minnesota with 3,200 miles of Great Lakes shoreline. The District is headquartered in downtown Detroit with area offices in Detroit, Mich., Duluth, Minn., Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., South Bend, Ind., and our Lake Michigan Area Offices located in Grand Haven, Mich., and Kewaunee, Wis.
Including 94 harbors on Lakes Michigan, Superior, Huron, St. Clair and the Michigan portion of Lake Erie, the District operations and maintains the world-famous Soo Locks. Officially referred to as the St. Marys Falls Canal, the Soo Locks have been the most important project throughout the history of the Detroit District. The District also manages the Great Lakes Water Control Data System, making it the Corps center for hydrometeorologic and water level data collection and dissemination for the Great Lakes system (water level forecast).
If you're looking for a partnering agency to help you with an engineering project, then we are ready to assist you. The Corps has a number of cost shared programs for working with States, local governments and Native American Indian tribes to address water resource and environmental problems.
In addition, under the Support for Others program (SFO) the Corps can provide, on a 100% reimbursable basis, technical support to Federal, State, municipal and Tribal agencies. The Detroit Districts expertise has been used extensively by other Federal agencies and many non-Federal customers.
