The Lake Superior Maritime Visitors Center


The Lake Superior Maritime Visitors Center is one of the Twin Ports and the regions most popular attractions.

* Hundreds of thousands of people are drawn to Duluth-Superior Harbor each year. They are attracted by the beauty of Lake Superior and the North Shore, by the endless parade of passing ships, and the bustle of maritime activity in the ports.

* Canal Park, located on the shore of the big lake at the Duluth Ship Canal, Aerial Bridges, and Lake Walk, focuses much of the publics interest in the port. Here, the Corps of Engineers provides visitors facilities and a Maritime Visitors Center which are handicap accessible, free of charge, and open to the public all year. Hours vary by the season. A steam engine from the retired Corps tug ESSAYONS is one of the Visitor Centers largest artifacts.

* The Lake Superior Maritime Visitors Center features information of the history of Lake Superior, the shipping activity of the Twin Ports, and the work of the Corps throughout the region. Among the attractions within the modern two-story building are full- sized replicas of ship cabins and a pilothouse, a massive steam engine, a working radar, and dozens of the finest scale ship models in the midwest.

* Film showings, educational programs, fact sheets, and brochures are available to visitors. The Visitor Centers staff also assists visitors in making the most of their stay in Duluth- Superior, one of Americas busiest ports. The Visitors Center has an outside ramp and inside elevator for handicap access. Parking is nearby.
