Over the course of the LMPDS, various public, agency and professional workshops and meetings have been held to provide updates on the progress of the study. Summaries of these workshops are presented here starting with the most recent.

Study Update Workshops Held July 25-27, 2000

The LMPDs Study Team held two Study Update Workshops this past July to update agency personnel and interested public on the status of the study. A focus of these meetings was the discussion of the implications of extreme water levels on coastal processes, planning policy and management, effectiveness of shoreline structures, and coastal hazard management. The first workshop was held in Zeeland, Michigan on July 25, 2000 at the Zeeland Community Center. Approximately 50 people were in attendance.

The second workshop was held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on July 27, 2000 at the University of Wisconsin, Great Lakes Water Institute. Approximately 40 people were in attendance and were provided with similar updates on 2000 activities, but with a focus on Ozaukee, Sheboygan, and Manitowoc counties in Wisconsin.

Presentations made at these workshops are available in the Presentations section.

Study Update Workshops Held in November 1999

In an effort to coordinate 1999 activities being conducted in the five prototype counties in Michigan and Wisconsin, the LMPDS Study Team conducted a series of "On-Site Workshops" in April and November of 1999 in both states.

The first of these was held in Muskegon, Michigan on November 9-10, 1999, as part of the Lake Michigan State of the Lake Conference hosted by the Environmental Protection Agency. Over 60 attendees participated in the 2-day event. The attendees were provided with updates on the various technical investigations being carried out in the prototype counties, particularly Ottawa and Allegan counties in Michigan.

The second workshop was held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on November 18, 1999 at the University of Wisconsin, Great Lakes Water Institute. Approximately 25 people were in attendance and were provided with similar updates on 1999 activities, but with a focus on Ozaukee, Sheboygan, and Manitowoc counties in Wisconsin.

FEPS Review Workshops Held in August 1999

In August of 1999, a Peer Review Workshop was held at the USACE Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory in Vicksburg, Mississippi. The purpose of this workshop was to conduct a technical review of the Flood and Erosion Prediction System that is being developed in the LMPDS. In attendance were coastal engineers and scientists from the USACE as well as other agencies, who provided comments and critique to the Study Team regarding the FEPS model. Key questions raised and comments made during the workshop by both attendees and presenters are presented on the FEPS Peer Review Workshop page.

LMPDS Study Team Holds Agency Workshops in April 1999

In an effort to coordinate 1999 activities being conducted in the 5 prototype counties (see note below) in Michigan and Wisconsin, the LMPDS conducted two workshops in April of 1999.

The first of these workshops was held April 27, 1999 in Zeeland, Michigan and was hosted by the Macatawa Area Coordinating Council. Approximately 40 people were in attendance including local government representatives from Ottawa and Allegan counties, as well as representatives from local shoreline property associations. Discussions at the workshop focused on the objectives of the LMPDS as well as important details of the investigations being conducted.

The second workshop was held April 29, 1999 in Manitowoc, Wisconsin and was hosted by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute. Approximately 20 attendees including representatives from the State of Wisconsin and the counties of Manitowoc, Sheboygan and Ozaukee counties discussed coordination of data collection plans and learned of other initiatives being conducted by the State that will feed into work being conducted in the LMPDS.
