Geographical Information Systems (GIS) will be a key analysis, and decision making tool in the Potential Damages Study. In this regard a number of activities are taking place:

• Design GIS Structure and Great Lakes GIS Strategy
  This is an ongoing task and involves the conversion and assembly of mapping data in consistent formats.
• Acquisition and Integration of Large Scale Spatial Data - Wisconsin
  This task is ongoing and has been partially completed.
• DEM, DOQQ, DOP and DRG Development
  USACE Detroit District is continuing to develop digital photography and mapping datasets for the Study.
• Acquisition of Digital Bluff Lines and Planimetric Data
  This work has been completed for the 5 prototype counties in 2000. Mapping for Berrien County, Michigan will take place in 2001.
• Acquisition of Digital Parcel Data
  This task is ongoing and has been partially completed for the 5 prototype counties.
• Acquisition of Terrestrial LIDAR Data
  This task is ongoing and has been partially completed for the 5 prototype counties.
• Acquisition of Bathymetric LIDAR (SHOALS) Data and NOAA Bathymetry Data
  This task is ongoing and has been partially completed for the 5 prototype counties.
• Historic Photo Analysis
  Initial work on this task was completed in 2000 and will be completed for the 5 prototype counties in 2001.
• Land Use Mapping Updates
  This task is ongoing and has been partially completed.
• Open Coast Shore Protection Inventory, Mapping and Trend Analysis
  This work has been completed for the 5 prototype counties in 1999.
• Drowned Rivermouth Shore Protection Inventory and Mapping
  This work has been completed for four drowned river mouth areas in the 5 prototype counties in 2000.
• Re-Attribution of Open Coast Shoreline Classification Data
  This work has been completed for the 5 prototype counties in 2000

In addition, GIS is being used to carry out other analysis and data collection and visualization activities in the project. This includes:

• Development of a Recession Rate and Land Use Analysis System
  This task was completed in 1999.
• Development of GIS Methods for Recession Rate Determination
  This task was completed in 1998-1999.
• Development of a Flood and Erosion Prediction System
  This task is basically complete. FEPS is being used to conduct evaluations on a county-by-county basis.
