They have a tendency of trapping littoral material in the adjacent shoreline in areas called as accretion fillets. In the early stages of the harbors life, the rate at which material is trapped in these accretion fillets can be significant. However, as the shoreline adjusts, these accretion fillets reach a "dynamic equilibrium" state and the amount of material trapped in the accretion fillets reduces significantly. At this stage in the harbors life, most littoral material either falls out in the navigation channel, where it is dredged and placed downdrift of the structure, or it by-passes the structure altogether.
