Diagram: Shore Protection Effects on Cohesive Shore Erosion.

When a shore parallel structure is built, it halts the erosion of the upper bluff. Since the bluff cannot erode, the area adjacent to it is starved of sand. However, wave energy continues to move sediment in front of the structure. Since the buffer of sand is not being replenished, the soil in front of the structure will continue to scour, allowing larger waves to break onto the structure. This continual attack will cause the area in front of the structure to deepen eventually causing undermining and a failed structure.
