Diagram: Sediment Budget (Effect of Revetments). Revetments are meant to protect the shore directly behind the structure

When designing a revetment, it is important to determine how much bluff erosion behind the structure will be prevented. When bluffs erode, sandy material is provided to the littoral system to help protect downdrift shoreline. Revetments are meant to protect the shore directly behind the structure, but it also will prevent sandy material from entering the littoral system from erosion starving downdrift beaches of the necessary sand needed to keep their shoreline stable, in turn causing harmful erosion.
