Current Section 111 Harbors

Many harbors within the Detroit District's Great Lakes region have been studied under the Section 111 authority since the 1970's. For some of these harbors, Section 111 study results indicate that there is sufficient benefit to implementing monitoring and mitigation programs to address shoreline damages attributable to Federal navigation structures.

It should be pointed out that these studies were conducted in the 1970's. With the advent of computer modeling and an increased insight in coastal processes, innovative analysis techniques may now be utilized to more accurately address nearshore sand transport.
