Algoma Harbor is located on the west shore of Lake Michigan, about 68 miles from Green Bay via Sturgeon Bay Harbor and the Lake Michigan Ship Canal, and about 115 miles northerly from Milwaukee. The project was authorized by the Rivers and Harbors Acts of March 3, 1871 and November 17, 1988. The existing project provides for a north pier 1,102 feet long; a south breakwater 1,530 feet long; an entrance channel 14 feet deep and 200 feet wide from that depth in Lake Michigan and extending 800 feet landward; and a channel 14 feet deep in the Ahnapee River 80 to 175 feet wide for 1,200 feet up to the Second Street Bridge. The harbor services primarily recreational navigation interests.
